How to properly maintain your pool

If you are about to embark on the wonderful world of an in-home pool, or maybe you already have one, let’s review the basics about maintaining this asset to your property. If you don’t feel you can commit to the job, contact Laughlin Pools for pool service in Ottawa and we will take care of it for you.

Here are a few things that pool owners should pay attention to on a regular basis:

Skimmer basket

This is located on the side of the pool and collects debris and pollutants. The basket should be kept clear and unclogged.

Pump basket

This is another lint pot. You will probably find a lot of hair accumulated here.

Water levels

Check the levels often. If the level becomes too low, the pump will overheat and die. Water is too high, and debris will accumulate.

Prevention is the way to go

Prevention is one of the best tactics. Keep as much foreign material out of the pool as possible.

  • Run the pool pump for at least 8 hours daily for circulation
  • Keep the pH around 7.4
  • Shock the pool weekly or following extreme weather conditions
  • Keep jets forcing water downward for the best circulation

When consistent pool maintenance isn’t working

How often you need to maintain the pool depends on its size, type, and how often it is used.

So, you followed all the rules, but your pool still seems cloudy. This could be the result of a number of things or combinations.

  • Too much chlorine
  • Too much shocking
  • High alkalinity
  • pH off
  • High ammonia
  • Clogged filter
  • Algae
  • Debris or insects
  • Swimmers and pets

There are a number of factors out of your control that can influence the condition of your pool. This includes wildlife, sun, foliage, pollen and rain.

As you approach your cleaning regimen, review the steps.

Shocking

Increasing the chlorine to high levels to kill bacteria, algae, and other contaminants quickly. Always re-read the directions and follow the instructions to the letter.

Vacuum

Remove all debris with a water-safe tool

Chemicals

Keep the water at the optimal pH. Testing kits are available from your pool supplier.

Clarify

Gather the pollutants into a larger mass for easier removal by using flocculant chemicals.

Regular cleaning and maintenance is the easiest way to prevent clouding.

Hire professional assistance

The best way to keep your Kanata pool in top shape is to hire a professional service. They will monitor the water regularly and perform all maintenance and cleaning work in a timely manner. That way, your pool is ready when you are. They are also the only choice for preventive maintenance to avoid costly repairs. Contact Laughlin Pools for any type of pool service in Ottawa, including maintenance, repair, water analysis, pool lighting and more!
